Sexual orientation is included in the kaleidoscope of color and expression of self. Inherent at birth, this part of one’s identity and sense of self have the potential to be discovered, explored, and expressed more deeply during the course of one’s life. The choice is not in where someone falls on the spectrum of sexual orientation – the choice is if, when, and how one integrates that aspect into their sense of and expression of self.
Karuna supports and affirms the gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and questioning presence in our world. Whether seeking initial understanding or safe expression, we work with individuals, couples, and families who are living in a world that still too often misunderstands and fears – and therefore oppresses – them.
The shame associated with this misunderstanding and the stress resulting from social oppression in daily life often call for psychotherapy as part of healing and empowerment. We help individuals remember and reconnect with their self-acceptance, self-respect, and self-love, resulting in their empowerment and experience of more peace, love, and joy of themselves and their lives – allowing the possibility of proud participation in the world’s colorful mosaic of variety.
